Greetings and welcome to day 4 of the AtoZChallenge. Who doesn’t love a great dragon? Today we have two of the really big hitters for everyone to decide who is the most dastardly of them all!
- Smaug
The dragon that drove the Dwarves from Erebor and laid waste to the town of Dale 150 years before Tolkein’s The Hobbit. This is one fearce creature; intelligent, malevolent and very powerful, Smaug is a match for almost anything. His downfall is his greed as he guards his hoard of gold obsessively. He has gold and gem stones embedded in his hide, but Bilbo found his one weakness, a small bare patch of skin. A fire-drake of imense power, is he worth your vote?
or
- Vermithrax Pejorative
This dragon likes to eat virgin girls and feeds them to her brood. She is from Disney’s Dragonslayer. In it she faces an apprentice wizard, but she if virtually indestructible thanks to her scales. Not even being buried alive can do anything but annoy her. She is a formidable enemy and only magic and sacrifice can beat her. Does the cruncher or virgin bones have your vote?

What is the AtoZChallenge?
For those who don’t know, the AtoZChallenge is a giant blog hop with thousands of blogs taking part. Every day in April, apart from Sundays, these blogs will post using a letter of the alphabet at a prompt, e.g. A on 1st, B on 2nd etc.It has been running since 2010 and was thought up by the lovely Arlee Bird who put out a challenge and it has grown and grown since. It is a superb way to meet other bloggers and to have a huge amount of fun.
I’m not familiar with either of these…sorry. 🙁
However, I like the sound of Smaug (sounds and pronunciation of words fascinate me…)

Smaug is definitely a dastardly dragon 🙂
Another tough decision, but probably Smaug.

Alex’s Ninja Minion
He is very big and bad 🙂
I’ll go with Smaug although tomorrow I could change my mind. Hey, Smaug destroyed an entire town.

Well Vermithrax Pejorative has a whole kingdom bowing to her so she wouldn’t keep destroying it 😉
Always Smaug. He is the best evil dragon ever. <3
He is definitely a great one 🙂
Ooo, what a great smackdown! Is it unfair that I picked Smaug because Benedict Cumberbatch plays him? I couldn’t help it.

WriteOnSisters – Masterplots from A to Z
Not at all – if it had been Tom Hiddleston I would have been shamelessly voting too 😉
Smaug is among my favorite characters/dragons…dastardly, yes, but I like to think that his intellect and his use of it enables him to be bargained with…potentially. As to Vermithrax…a dragon that literally leaves the body parts of its victims lying about with its babies feasting upon said body parts makes me believe that its priority is food and anyone seeking to bargain need not enter. Ever. I loved that movie, but that dragon was one of the scariest things my child eyes ever beheld. 🙂
Vermithrax is a very, very scary dragon, but your analysis does seem to be on point 🙂
Smaug certainly gets my vote.
When I was very little, I had a book on dragons and I used to cut the pictures out. My mother would get very angry and tried to make me throw the book away, but I never did. I don’t know what happened to it. She likely waited till I went to bed on night and threw it in the trash without me knowing.
Mothers and throwing things out – what can you do? I still haven’t quite forgiven mine for getting rid of all the Rupert annuals when we moved house once.
Smaug, for me! Love Tolkein. And there is something about the length of the build up, which adds to the fear! ~Liz http://www.lizbrownleepoet.com
The secret to any good horror = build up 🙂 I wish I could remember my first reaction to Smaug when we had the Hobbit read to us as children – I remember what I thought of the ring, but not the dragon.
