AtoZChallenge 2015: S is for Samling
Wow, this month is going fast, already we’re on ‘S’ for our theme here at Wittegen Press this year, ‘why’, specifically, why have we, as authors, written the titles we have. And, each day, the book we’re talking about will be FREE.
So, today I’m talking about a story I wrote for The Wittegen Press Giveaway Games called Samling Born. Samling Born is a contemporary paranormal fantasy whose protagonist, Luka, is a werewolf, but he’s also a university student and the bassist in a band with all the ordinary problems of a guy his age.
Samling is a Swedish/Danish word meaning collection/meeting/gathering and it is the name I have given to the greater pack to which Luka and all werewolves belong. I find names for things by looking at other languages quite a lot (Google Translate is my friend ;)). I find it fun to play with sounds, finding a word that feels right for what I’m trying to describe, and drawing inspiration from foreign words allows me to do that. Samling felt like the right word for me, because in the tradition I developed for the story, my werewolves are originally Nordic.
This story, or at least the first couple of scenes, actually started life as a m/m RPS fanfic based around a German rock band, but I didn’t get very far with it and so I decided to use the premise and expand my ideas. Thus was born Race Memory, the band in my story, the members of which share a house and rub along together with only the normal kind of frictions until Luka is forced to reveal his furry secret.
I enjoyed writing this story, it’s a bit angsty and the characters are quirky, but I also drew on sharing a house when I was at uni to set the scene, so it’s also a little nostalgic for me. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it 🙂
So, have you had your fill of vampires and werewolves, or do you still love ’em like I do?

Luka is a werewolf, born and bred, but most of his uni friends and fellow bandmates in ‘Race Memory’ don’t know that – not until the night their friend, Ben, is attacked by another of Luka’s kind. In order to help Ben, Luka must risk their friendship to the wild part of his nature and face the nightmares in his own past.

Also sounds good and duly downloaded… just need to remember where I’ve put it so I can read it!
I love the idea of the house sharing side of things too 😀
I smiled when you said the origins of the word were Swedish/Danish given my love of Danish jewellery 😉

Yeah – sharing a house, having done it at uni – you’re all on top of one another, and it can lead to some interesting dynamics. 🙂
No genre/subject can be overused If it’s well written.
Very true 🙂
Wait, are you saying people get tired of werewolves and vampires? Blasphemy! 😉

LOL! I know – sacrilege, I say, sacrilege! ;P
I only tire of the poorly written, overused plots with paint by number vampires as the characters. I never tire of well written vampire stories. I can’t explain my love affair with those dead/undead creatures. I will always love Angel & Spike … oh and Eric from True Blood.

I preferred Angel when he was in Buffy to him in Angel, but Spike, well, what’s not to love/hate in that undead charmer ;P
